Larry Bates has driven for Alden Logistics for 16 years. He has been an owner operator since the 90s and today he runs four trucks for Alden.
Since the beginning, Larry valued control over his life and income, so he bought his own truck. “I had to learn everything on my own,” he says. “After I drove my own truck, Alden provided me an opportunity to expand from one truck to two trucks.”
Larry has earned respect from the other drivers for his hard work, honesty, and entrepreneurial spirit.
“It takes hard work, most people have nine-to-five jobs, but trucking is 24-hours a day,” Larry says. “Sometimes I work 10-to-12-hour days. These days I focus on managing people and often their problems become your problems. But it’s worth it to be an owner because you have more control over your life.”
Larry is known his propensity to invest back into his business. He buys new trucks every five years and maintains his fleet. He has found success in recruiting drivers that appreciate his commitment to treat them fairly, do the right thing, and keep his word.
Larry’s advice to other truck drivers who would like to carve a similar path is to focus on financial management. “Make sure you have access to cash flow and have good credit. It’s not easy to build good credit. If you’re working, save your money and build relationship of mutual trust with your bank,” he says.
The most rewarding aspect to his career is the “blessing to be able to provide jobs to people that provides them an avenue to support their families. In the end they bless me as much as I bless them.”
