December 2023 W.I.S.E. Award – Lee Fry

Describe your position at Evans.

I am one of two remaining Merchants Forwarding drivers. I drive to and from the Ford Parts Redistribution Center on Pennsylvania Rd., several times a day. I also shuttle parts to packagers or paint shops. Every delivery point is within 30 minutes of the Melvindale facility.

What do you like most about your job?

I started out in the warehouse, and it wasn’t for me. I’m naturally an outdoorsman and I like to be on the road.

How have things changed over the years?

Nothing has really changed. I’ve been driving my whole life. I’m proud to have worked at one company for nearly 30 years.

What kind of outdoor activities do you like?

Lots of things! I hunt deer and fish for walleye from my 17.5-ft MonArk boat. Everything I catch, I eat, or I hang on the walls of my home office. I also have an outdoor vegetable garden and a greenhouse where I grow hydroponic lettuce. I repurpose the 2×4 wood that comes from our customer’s containers to support my woodworking hobby. I have made wood planters, figurines, and lighthouses. I couldn’t find the right desk for my office, so I decided to build my own. I like to be creative.

What’s something else we don’t know about you?

I met my wife more than 10 years ago while working at Merchants. She was a switcher at Pack-Rite Industries and that was one of my stops.

What’s something unusual that we would find in your home?

120-gallon freshwater fish tank. It was too much work to keep it up, so I turned it into a terrarium.

What’s your favorite restaurant and what do you order?

I love to cook. I cook vegetables from my garden, and I eat everything that I catch. I cook on Sundays for the entire week. I make chicken noodle soup, sausage tortellini, salad, pasta with homemade tomato sauce and more. Oh! Don’t forget the BUD LIGHT!
