November 2021 W.I.S.E. Award – Nona Adkins

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in Kentucky and I’ve lived in the Detroit area since 1996. The Kentucky Wildcats are my favorite college basketball team and I love to watch games on my monthly visits back home to see my Dad.  When I was 40 years old, I earned a bachelor’s degree in quality management and that continues to be one of my proudest achievements. When I’m not working, I’m rooting for Michigan football (GO Wolverines!) working in my yard, doing interior projects in my house, and trying my luck at the casino.

Describe your job at Evans Distribution Systems.

I oversee the quality and inspection operations. That includes all repacks, damage inspections, testing, inventory control, order fulfillment, reconciliations, and labor management. I also assist the warehouse with orders when they are short-handed. There are three key customers that we service in quality:

1. Stanislaus tomatoes—as the cans come in by rail, they often get damaged. We inspect the cans for leaks and dents. Any dent larger than a dime is tossed!

2. For Valor we inspect tailpipes for damage and conduct various inspections using calipers and go-no-go gauges.

3. We inspect the Vistaprint t-shirts when they arrive, documenting the country of origin, sizes, and colors.

What do you like most about your job?

There is never a dull moment! The tasks required by the quality department changes daily. One day we could be conducting an inspection on rims, the next day wheel bearing. I also enjoy assisting other departments and helping my coworkers, outside of my department, when they are in a crunch. I love working with my team. They have been a great asset to the quality department over the past year.

What do you like most about working for Evans Distribution?

I like the fact that it’s a family-oriented workplace and stable company that has a good history and reputation. Also, this industry is always in demand and I’m grateful to have job security.

Words from my manager, Rich Huziak: “Nona is truly an asset to the team. She is hard working and always willing to go the extra mile for her customers. Meeting and exceeding their expectations is just in her DNA. Nona is always willing  to lend a hand wherever possible and we all appreciate her for it.”
